Western Southland Farm Hosting

Location: Mossburn-Riverton, Southland, Established 1986

A warm welcome awaits you on our farms when you come to Southland. The Southland Province is famous for its scenery, seafood, its large number of sheep and farming.

Our farms are within short travelling time from Queenstown, Milford, Te
Anau, Riverton, Invercargill, Bluff, Dunedin and the Southern Scenic Route.

The Western Southland Farm Hosting Group was established in 1986 by a group of farming families and since then has offered guests the opportunity to experience a range of farming activities and life on genuine working New Zealand farms.

These farms offer a wide variety of farming operations which include
raising sheep, deer, cattle, and intensive cropping.

The farm owner gives visitors an insight into how rural New Zealander's
live and work. Farm tours are included as part of the stay or guests may choose to go for walks, sightseeing or just relax and enjoy the countryside.

This is a unique opportunity to experience the tranquillity and natural
beauty of Western Southland.

Southland has sparkling clear rivers where trout are plentiful,
unpolluted riverbanks and a spectacular countryside. We have some of the finest trout fishing rivers in New Zealand at our doorstep.

There is a network of well maintained roads through the countryside and
these are clearly named to assist you.

A special quality of Southland is that it is not over populated. Visitors
are able to enjoy the scenery and other activities without having to compete for space with large numbers of other people.

There is time to travel in peace, time to look, time to walk and listen to
the abundant bird life, see unique plants and meet friendly New Zealander's.

All our homes offer quality accommodation, with a high standard of comfort and cleanliness, and all have the modern conveniences of city homes in a peaceful relaxed setting.

Enjoy farm fresh food with your hosts while learning more about our way of life and our culture. You will find that hosts have a diverse range of
interests including cooking, gardening, spinning, weaving, patchwork,
genealogy, photography, fishing, hunting, rugby, squash, farming politics, education, to name a few.

Western Southland has a good range of activities available for travellers: trout fishing, bush walking, jet boating, golfing, local craft
establishments, museums, a paua shell  factory, vintage machinery museum, surfing and beach walks.

The climate is temperate. Summer days can be hot but may be tempered with cooler sea breezes so it is advisable to bring a warm jumper or wind jacket if outdoor activities are planned. Winters are cool with frosts possible but these are followed by lovely clear days.

In summer we have lovely long twilight evenings and it is not completely
dark until around 10.00pm. We have beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The clear unpolluted atmosphere provides wonderful views of the southern skies and the stars at night are truly amazing.

So as you can imagine a farm stay in Western Southland is a unique
experience. Guests arrive as strangers and leave as friends with many
wonderful memories of a special place known for its charm and hospitality.
